Professional ZX Spectrum 16K/48K Repair & Restoration Service
If your Sinclair ZX Spectrum is showing signs of age—such as a degrading video signal, random crashes, or a complete failure to boot—our dedicated repair service is here to help. We specialise in the 16K and 48K rubber key models, providing the technical expertise required to keep these 8-bit icons running for another forty years.
High-Quality Recapping with Vishay Capacitors
The most common failure point in vintage hardware is the electrolytic capacitors. We perform a complete replacement of all electrolytic capacitors using high-quality Vishay capacitors.
- Longevity: Vishay components are world-renowned for their reliability and tight tolerances.
- Authentic Aesthetic: We select capacitors with a similar blue colouring to the originals, ensuring the motherboard retains its classic look.
Thermal Management and ULA Protection
The Uncommitted Logic Array (ULA) is the heart of the Spectrum and is prone to overheating. To protect this rare custom chip, we offer:
- ULA Heatsink Addition: We install a heatsink to dissipate heat effectively.
- Socket Optimisation: Where required, we can remove the ULA socket and solder the chip directly to the motherboard for better thermal transfer and connectivity.
- Power Efficiency: If a TRACO power regulator is added to your machine, a heatsink may not be required as the internal heat generation is significantly reduced. We will assess your specific board and discuss the best path for your hardware.
Comprehensive Diagnostic and Soak Testing
We don’t just fix the obvious faults; we ensure the entire system is stable. Our standard repair procedure includes:
- Full Diagnostic ROM Check: Testing internal RAM and logic.
- Keyboard Matrix Test: Ensuring every “rubber key” registers correctly.
- Soak Test: A minimum one-hour continuous run-time to check for thermal stability.
- Game Load & Play Test: A real-world test using original tape loading to confirm the EAR/MIC circuits and graphics are 100% functional.
Optional Composite AV Modification
Modern televisions often struggle with the original RF (aerial) signal. Upon request, we can complete a Composite AV mod. This bypasses the old RF modulator to provide a cleaner, more stable video signal that works seamlessly with modern TVs via a standard RCA cable.
Why Choose a Professional Repair?
Vintage PCBs are delicate; track lifting and heat damage are common when using incorrect tools. Our service uses professional-grade desoldering equipment and high-quality consumables to ensure your Spectrum is treated with the care it deserves.
How the Service Works
Once you have purchased the service, you will receive instructions on how to safely package and send your unit to our UK workshop. We recommend sending the console only (unless you suspect a fault with your PSU) to save on shipping costs.
Note: This service is for the 16K/48K rubber key models only. If your machine requires significant replacement chips (e.g., a dead ULA), we will contact you before proceeding with any additional costs.
