The Multimedia Revolution: A Tribute to the Amiga 500, 600, and 1200
If the Atari ST brought 16-bit power to the home, the Commodore Amiga brought the soul of a workstation. Released in an era when most computers were monochrome or limited to basic colors, the Amiga was a technicolor dream. Amiga is a family of personal computers introduced by Commodore in 1985. The original model is one of several mid-1980s computers with 16- or 16/32-bit processors, 256 KB or more of RAM, mouse-based GUIs, and significantly improved graphics and audio compared to previous 8-bit systems. These systems include the Atari ST—released earlier the same year—as well as the Macintosh and Acorn Archimedes. Based on the Motorola 68000 microprocessor, the Amiga differs from its contemporaries by including custom hardware to accelerate graphics and sound, including sprites and a blitter, and a pre-emptive multitasking operating system called AmigaOS.
The A1000 was released in July 1985, but production problems kept it from becoming widely available until early 1986. The best-selling model, the a500, was introduced in 1987 along with the more expandable a2000. The A3000 was introduced in 1990, followed by the A500 Plus and the A600 in March 1992. Finally, the A1200 and A4000 were released in late 1992. The Amiga line sold an estimated 4.85 million units.
Although early advertisements cast the computer as an all-purpose business machine, especially when outfitted with the Sidecar IBM PC compatibility add-on, the Amiga was most commercially successful as a home computer, with a wide range of games and creative software. The Video Toaster hardware and software suite helped find a prominent role in desktop video and video production. The Amiga’s audio hardware made it a popular platform for music tracker software. The processor and memory capacity enabled 3D rendering packages, including LightWave 3D, Imagine, and Traces, a predecessor to Blender.
The Custom Chip Revolution: Why the Amiga Was Different
The Amiga wasn’t just a computer with a fast CPU; it was a team of specialized processors working in harmony. While the Motorola 68000 handled the logic, custom chips took over the heavy lifting:
- Agnus: Managed memory and the “Blitter,” allowing for incredibly fast graphics manipulation.
- Denise: Handled the video output, supporting thousands of colors via HAM (Hold-And-Modify) mode.

- Amiga 600 (1992): The “baby” Amiga. It was a compact, surface-mount redesign of the A500 Plus. While it lacked a numeric keypad, it introduced an internal IDE header and a PCMCIA slot, making it a favorite today for modern CF-card storage hacks.
- Amiga 1200 (1992): The 32-bit powerhouse. Featuring the AGA (Advanced Graphics Architecture) chipset and a faster 68EC020 processor, it could display 256 colors from a palette of 16.8 million (or up to 262,144 in HAM8 mode).
The Big Box Power: Amiga 2000, 3000, and 4000
While the home models ruled the living room, the “Big Box” Amigas ruled the production studios:
- Amiga 2000: A massive mention is required here. It was the “expandable” Amiga, featuring Zorro II slots. It became the backbone of the desktop video revolution, specifically when paired with the NewTek Video Toaster.

- The Tracker Scene: Software like Protracker allowed musicians to use 8-bit samples to create professional-grade stereo music, a precursor to modern digital audio workstations.
